Almost two decades ago, I decided I needed a change, and I shaved my entire head. In my hair adventures, I have sported pixie cuts, bobs, blue hair, burgundy hair (also known mistakenly as bergundy), green hair, purple hair, dreadlocks, and everything else you can imagine. Your hairstyle is one of the first things people notice about you. Obviously, any changes you make to yourself don’t have to be quite as drastic as mine, but I will say this — don’t knock it until you try it. It can be incredibly empowering to make a radical change to your appearance.
It’s so exciting to have a whole head’s worth of ways to express yourself, right? Well, it can also be a little overwhelming when you try to decide what’s right for you. These days, people walk around with everything from rainbow hair to shaved sides and everything in between, and it’s about time. With all those options available for self-expression, how are you supposed to pick one, though? Well, that’s the fun part. Sit down, get comfortable, and grab a beverage of your choice. Fall is on the horizon, and it’s an excellent time to think about some warm burgundy hair color and an adorable new cut to match.
Why Beautiful Burgundy Hair Might Be for You
Before we talk about this sumptuous color, let’s talk about how it’s spelled. Now and then, the word burgundy gets misspelled as “bergundy,” and that’s okay. It’s still one of the coolest semi-natural hair colors in existence. Now, let’s get to the good stuff.
Burgundy hairstyles are striking, dramatic, and sensual. Unlike some of the newer colors that have gained popularity like blue and purple, most burgundies are still fully acceptable in every social situation. The fact that you can all at once make a sweeping and dramatic change while keeping the color acceptable for job interviews makes burgundy hair an excellent choice across the board.
Things to Consider Before the First Snip
As we mentioned, your choices nowadays are unlimited. If you can imagine it, and you have the hair for it, there’s nothing you can’t do. Now, let’s talk for a moment about the things you need to consider before taking the plunge. When you are deciding on a new hairstyle, you need to make sure that it will work on you. It’s easy to assume that only a professional would understand how this all works. That’s simply not the case, though. You can make this decision on your own, and we are here to help you figure out how.
First, there are many different shades of burgundy, and they are drastically different from one another. Picking the right shade for your face is essential. Secondly, when deciding on a cut, the shape of your face is very important. We will discuss all of that below.
How to Find the Perfect Hairstyle for Your Face
First, let’s talk about the shape of your face. There are five main shapes to choose from heart-shaped, long, oval, round, and square. Don’t worry if you are unsure what the shape of your face is, watch the video below to figure it out.
Now that you know the shape of your face, let’s quickly talk about the right styles for those shapes.
Heart-shaped and long
If you have a heart-shaped face, you want a style that draws attention away from your chin. You want to attract attention to your eyes instead. Create that effect with bangs or large volume on the sides. For those of you sporting a long face, remember the longer your hair is, the longer your face will look. Short styles work well on people with long faces, as well as bangs to break up the length of your face.
Oval
Now, some of us got lucky, and we have the face built for any haircut: the oval-shaped face. If you have one of these, your main concern should be the texture of your hair. A lot of the advice for people with long faces also applies to you, though, in case you still feel a little lost.
Round and square
That leaves the round and square-faced among us. If you have a round face, think about a cut that ends just below the chin. The idea is to elongate your face. A short style would also do the trick. For those of you with a square face, the whole idea is to downplay your angular jaw. Adding texture with curls or choppy ends is an excellent way to accomplish that.
The Many Shades of Burgundy Hair
Now, one more step before we get to the fun stuff. Let’s talk about the many different shades of burgundy hair and what will work best for your skin tone. The color burgundy is a reddish brown shade. To make things even more fun, burgundy is all about wine. It is the color of a specific wine that comes from the Burgundy region of France. Luckily, the wine references don’t end there.
According to Matrix.com, the following shades are all included in the burgundy family:
Cabernet: is a deep red, with more red tones than burgundy
Merlot: is lighter with more red tones than burgundy
Cranberry: think burgundy but with more pink
Cordovan: burgundy with a bit more brown
Maroon: red with chestnut highlights
Claret: this one is red with a light tint of brown
The best news is that with all these shades available, finding one for every skin tone is easy. A general rule of thumb is that cooler burgundy shades with red and violet highlights work best on people with pink, olive, or ebony skin. If you have skin that is peachy or golden, the warmer shades with brown tones are for you.
Experts recommend that you see a professional to get their help finding the correct shade. With burgundy colors, getting them from a box can be even more unpredictable than the other colors — and most of us know exactly how crazy those can get.

And now, finally, we have gotten to the fun part. Below we will talk about some of the hottest hair trends to help you on your search for the perfect style. First, let’s talk about an awesome way to dye your burgundy hair that is stunning. It would work on medium and long hair and its called the ombre.
Instead of ordinary highlights, the ombre lightens the hair on one end or the other. When your hair is colored this way, it’s all at once work appropriate as well as club ready. On top of that, it looks really cool when you wear it up. Here’s another photo with some different coloring. This super-cute layered medium-length bob looks great with the ombre look.

The ombre can go light to dark or dark to light — it’s all about your personal preference.

These types of cuts are great for heart-shaped faces, long faces, and of course oval, as well. Be bold with your bangs, ladies. I have a really high forehead, and a long face and I couldn’t live without mine.

You can do all sort of things with your bangs to change up your look. You can cut them chunky or straight or leave them long.
The bob haircut

Now let’s talks about a haircut called the bob. The bob is generally chin to shoulder-length hair. It can work, though, on all different hair types and textures. Check out what I mean below.
The bob is an incredibly versatile cut. Personally, I love it for my hair, which is incredibly thin. I have a long face. It’s a great way to round out my face and make it appear shorter. If you have wavy and thick hair, though, this cut could still work very well. Check this one out.

You can get the bob cut either straight or in an A-line like the cuts you see here. An A-line style means the hair rests at an angle instead of straight around your head. A bob will also work, even if on those who have longer hair.
Check out this super-adorable short bob with chunky bangs below.

You don’t have to keep it super-short on top, either. Pixie styles look great when your hair is slightly longer on top.

Sweet Inspiration for Your Next Hair Adventure
And there you have it. Some super-sweet visual inspiration for that next hair adventure. Remember, there are a few other things to consider. Make sure you are honest with yourself about your hair’s texture and thickness. Don’t choose a style that won’t work with your hair. Your stylist will thank you. Also, make sure you pick a look that fits your lifestyle. Don’t pick something that is going to take an hour to prepare if you are a new mom, for example.
